SHAMPOOING
To shampoo is to wash, cleanse or remove all dirt or other impurities from the scalp and hair by the process of shampooing. The selection of the shampoo should depend upon the hair type. Egg shampoo is good for dry hair but avoid products which contain alcohol as they will dry out the hair even further. For oily hair use some mild shampoo. Care should be taken while using shampoo. Do not scrub or over massage. It is better to rinse thoroughly with Luke warm water. If the hair is too oily, add lemon juice in Luke warm water and rinse.

Shampooing can be done as often (ideally every alternate day) as required to keep the hair clean and healthy, as long as you condition regularly. Switch shampoos once a month to avoid hair buildup.

Method of Shampooing
Prepare the hair for shampooing. Before wetting your hair for shampooing, comb through with a wide toothed comb to prevent tangles. Mix and adjust the water flow. Mix the water to a comfortable temperature. Wet the hair and scalp thoroughly. Apply the shampoo to the hair by first pouring it into your hand and never directly. Apply with the hands and fingers, massage firmly in rotating and circular movements. Massage the whole head. Rinse the hair and scalp thoroughly and carefully. Apply more shampoo and massage for the second time if needed, finally rinse all shampoo from the hair and scalp with clean water. Finally check the hair lines and make sure that the dirt and shampoo has been removed from hair and scalp. Dry the hair gently. Don’t rub just blot the wet hair with a towel and then smooth the towel along the length of your hair. Avoid blow drying as far as possible. If you shampoo regularly there is no need to lather twice.

CONDITIONING
All types of hair have to be conditioned to keep it shiny and flexible. Conditioning is specially useful for dry hair. It adds to the natural oil supply and gives dry hair, shine as well as bounce and strength. For oily hair, use conditioner only on the ends of your hair .

Method of Conditioning

After shampooing gently squeeze the excess water.

Comb the hair with the fingers or with wide toothed comb from the roots to the ends gently. Remove tangles.

Apply little conditioner and rub the conditioner through the hair with the fingers. Never rub on the scalp.

Keep it on the hair for 5 minutes

Now gently massage the hair to loosen the conditioner.

Rinse the hair and remove all traces of conditioner. Now dry the hair.

Conditioners used for different types of Hair

Damaged hair – Protein Conditioner

Dry hair – Moisturising or Intensive Conditioner

Oily hair – Any normal (oil free) conditioner

Purpose of Conditioning
The key to beautiful hair is a beautiful scalp. If it is kept clean and normal balances are maintained it performs its functions well. Each hair is made up of a very delicate fibers.
Conditioning is a way of giving the hair a more intense kind of nourishing treatment. It helps to protect hair from counter acting dryness, making it smooth and easier to manage.
Treatments with conditioners helps to correct the effects of poor hair care. Henna is a good conditioner. Treatment with henna is good for the hair.

Choosing a hairstyle depends on various factors. An important factor is the shape of your face. Your life style is also a major element. If you wash, condition and style your hair every morning, a short cut may be best for you. If you have plenty of time for hair care you may prefer to wear your hair long. The distribution, quantity and texture of your hair, the curliness or straightness and your height are the other important factors for choosing a hair style.

Different hairstyles to suit the shape of your face

Round face
A round face will look best with hairstyles that add angles and helps conceal broad, round cheeks. For persons who have short hair, it is better to have a cut with most of the hair on top and less on sides. For long hair, an hairstyle with curls or waves surrounding the face will be better.

Square face
A square jaw and brow are best softened by a curly or wavy hair style that rounds off the angles of your face. Curls or waves worn forward on the outer edges of your face from your forehead will be more suited for a square face.
An oval face
An oval face can be enhanced by a variety of simple hairstyles. Your hairstyle will be most pleasing, if you wear it straight or slightly wavy. Short or long styles will look best when brushed or held back from your face.

Triangular face
The best hairstyle for this shape face are those worn away from your face at your forehead and temples and softly waved or curled around the jaws or those worn full at your temples, with straight or waved bangs across the width of your forehead.

Dry Hair
Dry hair is due to inactive oil glands. It is also caused by other factors like over exposure to the sun, using harsh shampoo and chemical treatment. Accumulated oil, block the pores not allowing the oil to flow on to the surfaceThis is another reason for dry hair. Dry hair would need plenty of nourishment.

Massage well with a warm herbal oil at least twice a week. Follow a diet rich in zinc. Use a mild shampoo and avoid harsh ones since the chemicals in them can strip hair of its outer protein layer, further drying the scalp. Do not use electric curlers and hair dryers.

Oily Hair
This is usually accompanied with oily skin. This is due to the over secretion of oil. Hence the scalp and hair gets too oily. Oily hair is easily recognizable. It looks greasy even after shampooing and and attracts more dirt.

The oily hair needs to be washed every third or fourth day or even more frequently depending on individual comfort and rinsed out with lemon. Use oils and shampoos rich in neem and henna. A head massage with a herbal oil helps maintain the pH level of the scalp. Avoid oily foods and binge on green leafy vegetables and fruits.

To figure out your hair type:
Dab a tissue on your scalp the second day after wash. If it has an oil blot, you have normal hair. If the tissue shows nothing, it is dry. If strands stick to each other then it is greasy hair .

Balanced or Normal Hair
This is the most ideal hair. It is shining, well balanced and does not dry out. To maintain this ideal condition a well balanced diet and proper care is essential.

The Short Hair Variety
Are you afraid to cut your hair because you feel it will limit your hair style choices? Or do you currently have short hair and are bored to tears with the same old look?Relax—you don’t have to give up variety when you have short hair!A good shorthaired look depends on many factors, chieflyFacial shape
Hair type
Cut

Hair products
Color
Perms
Makeup
Accessories
Before you make the final cut, so to speak, check over your options. It’s never a great idea to get a haircut on a whim. As with buying something useless, expensive and non-returnable, the saying goes, “Buy in haste. Repent at leisure.”

If you’re having a horrible hair day, pick up the phone instead of the scissors. Make an appointment with a stylist you trust, and give yourself at least 24 hours to think about what you want. (Meanwhile, put on a hat and get on with your day.)

Facial Shape
What is your facial shape? A good way to check is to pull your hair back from your face. Is it round? Long? Kind of squared at the chin line? Oval? There are many books out there that can help you with hairdos for your particular facial shape, and you may want to refer to some of them.

Also, many salons offer an imaging service that can show you how you would look in different hair styles. What are your best feature(s)? A good hair style can really play up your eyes or mouth, for example.

Generally speaking, if your face is tends to be heavy at the jawline, you may not want a style that adds more bulk to that area. If your face is long and thin, a long, straight style may just make your face look longer. If your face is round, then a halo of curls may make your head look too much like a ball.

Just a quick word here on glasses—one of the best things you can do to update your look is to update the style of your glasses. If you are currently wearing 80′s-style big-frame glasses, check out the new smaller styles. More stylish glasses can help your overall look.

Hair Type
What kind of hair do you have? Is it straight and silky? Thin and flyaway? Thick and bushy? Naturally wavy or curly? What does it do right after you wash it, using no products? If you are cutting your hair to make it easier to care for, be sure that you choose a style that doesn’t make you spend more time than you did when it was long!

Again, generally speaking, if your hair tends to be stick-straight and on the thin side, a blunt-cut hair style may suit your hair more. This type of cut often makes the hair appear thicker than it actually is.

If your hair is bushy, you may want to get more of a layered cut to make the hair appear smoother. Be realistic about what your own hair is like. For instance, if you’ve fallen in love with a model’s silky pixie cut and your own hair is thick and coarse, you can bet that the same cut on you is not going to look like hers—the hair is too different.

Again, talk with your stylist (who has probably seen and handled all types of hair) about what will work with your hair.

Hair Cut
The cut is THE defining factor of short hair! The cut can make or break a great short hairdo. Be sure that your stylist is trained and experienced in working with short hair. Often a good short hair cut will take much more time than longer hair. The cut has to be precise to make the right haircut. Before you leave the chair , check:

Is the cut even?
Is the style what you wanted?
Do you that feel you can duplicate the style at home?
Does the hair frame your face nicely?
Are the back and sides the way you want them?
Remember, you are the customer, and you are paying.

Do yourself a big favor and spend the money for a really good cut. Believe me, this is not the area to skimp on! There isn’t a whole lot you can do to cover up a bad haircut, except grin and bear it.

Hair Products
Now, having sprung for a great haircut, how about shampoo, conditioner, mousse, gel, spray, etc., etc.?

Many salons carry a couple of different lines of products, and of course, that’s what they use and will advocate for your hair.

There are two schools of thought on hair products: one is that they are all about the same, and it’s ridiculous to pay more for salon brands. The other is that “regular” products (non-salon brands) contain harsher ingredients that can harm your hair over the long run.

This is a decision you will have to make for yourself.

Stylists have seen all kinds of hair, every sort of awful hair disaster you can imagine, and have had to correct multitudes of homemade hair mistakes. It’s their job to know the hair products, and to try many others.

After a stylist has worked with your hair, they have a pretty good idea of the texture and condition of your hair.

If you don’t feel comfortable with buying the products the stylist suggests to you, you can always jot down the ingredients and look for a less expensive alternative somewhere else with similar ingredients.

My own opinion is that my hair always shows; it isn’t as if I bought a new outfit I only wear a few times each month. When my hair looks good, I feel good. I love trying new hair products, and don’t mind paying for them (another advantage to short hair—you use less products!). I am the daughter of the original Bargain Queen, and I don’t mind shopping endlessly to save $10 on a blouse. But great hair— that I’ll pay for! Again, this is only my two cents.

A good mousse, gel or styling stick can do wonders for giving you a whole new hairstyle.

I transformed my own straight hair completely when I used the right products to produce a Bed Head hairdo, and I mean completely ! People who knew me well had to give me a second look. If you go for the Bed Head, you can go from completely wild and spiky to leaving it straight in the back and sides, and spiking the top and front. Or slick it all down and spike the bangs only. It’s really up to your own imagination (and nerve!).

Hair Color
Color is another one of those personal decisions that cause a lot of soul-searching. Again, as with a haircut, it rarely works out to “impulse color.” I’ll bet most hair stylists wish they had a buck for everyone who walked into their salon moaning, “What was I thinking ?” Take a long, hard look at your own hair color. How do you like it? Many of us were blondes when we were babies, but not all of us kept that golden hair.

Your skin color has a great deal to do with what your hair color should be. If you’ve ever had your colors done and know whether you are a Winter, Spring, Summer, or Fall, then you’ll have a pretty good idea of your skin tone.

In general, most of us can be categorized as Warm (warm skin tones of gold, brown, olive, etc.) or Cool (cooler skin tones of blue-white, rose, etc.). When Warms use the cooler hair colors (black, dark brown, and so on), it sometimes can make the contrast between skin and hair too harsh. Same goes for Cools using warmer hair colors (reds, light browns, and so on). Read on for an example of what can happen.

My Own Hair Color Disaster:

Colors done well can really enhance your look. Remember Princess Diana before she married Prince Charles? Her hair was a blah mousy blonde. But after she had her hair highlighted to a gorgeous, glittery blonde, what a difference it made!

Conversely, the wrong color can ruin your appearance. It used to be that having your hair colored meant that it came out all one color. The new color technology today strives to give your new color the natural look of many hues, as you would find in natural hair color. You can get everything from a totally new color to soft highlights only.

Perms
Perms can really change your short hairdo! If your hair tends to be flat and you want more body, you can get a body perm. This will give volume rather than curls to your hair. The perms today can give you everything from gentle waves to ripples of tight curls. Something else to consider with a perm is how fast your hair grows. If your hair is straight and you get a curly perm, then eventually your naturally straight roots will show. Most perms last about 4-6 weeks, depending on your hair.

Check with your stylist about whether a perm will work for you and the look you want.

Makeup
When your hair is short, your makeup is doubly important—short hair helps draw attention to your face. Have you decided yet what you consider your best feature? If it is your eyes, then play them up! Here’s a good tip for mascara—before you put on any other makeup, coat your lashes carefully with mascara first. This will be your basecoat, the one you’ll add to later. Complete the rest of your makeup, then go back to your eyelashes. Now your mascara has something to “sit” on, and the next layer will really make your lashes stand out.

Before you put on makeup, always start with a moisturizer and a good sunscreen, and use them all year round. It’s been proven that many types of skin cancer (as well as wrinkles) can easily be avoided by this inexpensive solution. Don’t forget to use some on your face and neck, and your arms and hands.

After you get your hair styled, you might want to treat yourself to a makeup makeover. A good makeup consultant can give you some good tips on how to maximize your new look.

Accessories
With a short hairdo, you can really play up the accessories to give it panache. I heard this bit of mis-advice a while ago: “short hair/small earrings,” and “long hair/big earrings.” Not in MY book! I own and wear everything from tiny diamond studs to three-inch diameter mother-of-pearl honkers.

Dangly earrings give interest and allure to short hair, and hoops look great on everyone. Gemstone studs give a nice sparkle to your earlobes, which are right out there on display with short hair. If you don’t usually wear necklaces, you might consider getting a couple of gold or silver chains, with or without pendants to help give nice neck-interest. If you don’t care for chains, try using colorful silk cords to hang a pendant around your neck. And scarves, of course, are always great to try in different ways.

One of the great sad truths is that the older we get, the more we become victims of gravity. If you feel your neck isn’t as firm as it used to be, then let me share my pearl secret with you. Pearls by their very nature reflect light, and when you wear them around your neck, light is reflected up toward your face, therefore casting a very favorable light on your neck and face.

If you feel that short hairs are out of luck in the hair ornaments department, you couldn’t be more wrong. There are lots of cute short hair ornaments out now. Currently popular are the fancy bobby pins for short hair—these have sparkly rhinestones, enamel work, tiny ribbons and so on attached, and they make a neat look. There are also “mini-scrunchies” (you can also use the ones in the baby aisle, too!), colored rubber bands, clips, and small barrettes. I’ve been noticing that many women with short hair are creating some innovative styles using the rubber bands and barrettes: they take a few sections of hair, twist each section and then pin it down. This makes a cute semi-braided look.

Some manufacturers are making “hair jewels” that stick to the hair for a dramatic look. Your imagination is the only limit to what you can do to glitz up your look. One day in the mall I saw a young woman with very short dark hair who had tied a satiny green ribbon, headband-style, around her head with the ends trailing down her back. It was enchanting!

A few words on the sheer femininity of short hair—when your hair is short, other things are noticeable: your neck, ears, and shoulders. Play them up! Have you ever noticed how sexy longhaired women look when their hair is up? This is because the ears and neck are shown off. Try this the next time you go out: if your outfit allows it, apply some body glitter to your neck, upper back, chest, and ear lobes. You’ll be dazzling in any light!

Conclusion
Remember, the “right” hairstyle is what looks right on you. Short hair is every bit as versatile as long hair, and you can have a lot of fun coming up with new ideas. Just because you walk out of a salon looking one way doesn’t mean you have to keep the same look every day. Celebrate your individuality in every way you can!

For best long hair styles, work with your hair’s natural texture. If working against the natural texture, ensure that your hair is styled correctly
Long Hair For best long hair styles, work with your hair’s natural texture. If working against the natural texture, ensure that your hair is styled correctly (right styling technique, tools and products).Even though hair can be long, it still must have a strong cut & color.
Short Hair
Don’t shampoo your short style too much and use products that enhance your cut, but don’t take over your style. Ensure that your hair is cut on a regular basis (4-6 weeks) to keep your style in check.

Dry Hair
For dry hair always, use a conditioning treatment at least once a week. For an in-salon treatment, I recommend Aveda Elixir Remedy and for at home maintenance, I recommend Sap Moss Nourishing Concentrate. At home, always use a regular conditioner, plus a conditioning treatment.

Curly Hair
Shampoo curly hair only once a week but rinse daily and use Aveda Elixir leave-in conditioner as a styling product. Avoid any products that contain alcohol, as these dry your hair out and create much dreaded frizz.

Colored Hair
Ensure that any colour you choose compliments your skin tone & eye color. Also take into account your current style – ensure that the color compliments your style without overtaking it! I always think that color has to also suit the personal attitude and lifestyle of the client.

Fringes
Very fashionable at the moment! A fringe must suit your face shape and not just reflect the current fashion trends. Always have a professional stylist trim your fringe (offered as a complimentary maintenance service at Synergy Hair Melbourne) and NEVER use the kitchen scissors!

Blow-drying Hair Straight
Always use a protective product when styling your hair straight. Good tools are essential – use a blow-dryer with a strong air flow, not just a very hot one. If blow-drying hair straight regularly, use a treatment, weekly, to prevent your hair from drying out and frazzled ends.

Dandruff
Dandruff is a mysterious topic. Mysterious from the viewpoint that there is no commonly agreed upon theories about what actually causes the condition. There is also no known published cure.Even though there are estimates that as much as 97% of the population of the United States will at some point in their lives have a form of dandruff, there is still a lack of total agreement about many elements of the condition.

Dandruff can happen at any age but is most commonly found in people between the ages of 12 and above.

A form of dandruff known as cradle cap occurs in newborns and infants.

General Description of Dandruff
Dandruff (or dry flaky scalp) is an itchy, annoying and persistent skin disorder of the scalp. A dark suit and dandruff simply don’t go together!

There is nothing more embarrassing than to have someone brush white scaly flakes off your beautiful black dress or navy blue jacket.

Based on ongoing research, it has been noted that in the past ten years dandruff problems in the United States have become more serious and more frequent.

Dry or Greasy Dandruff
Dandruff can cause either an overly dry scalp with itchy white flakes that may be waxy or greasy or dandruff can manifest as an oily greasy scalp with scales.

What Is Dandruff?
A person’s entire body surface continuously sheds dead skin cells. The skin itself sheds every twenty-four days.

Dandruff, the shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp at an excessive rate, is the result of the normal growing process of the skin cells of the scalp.

Excessive Sloughing Of Old Cells
In a normal scalp, the process of sloughing off old cells and manufacturing of their replacements is very orderly and complete. In the dandruff scalp, there is mass disorder and often the departing cells are not dead before leaving the scalp.

Why there should be a speedup in the scalp’s cell production is still a debated mystery.

There appear to be two different causes of dandruff. Internal and external.

Internal Causes
Among the myriad of internal causes suspected are:

hormonal imbalance
poor health
excessive perspiration
poor hygiene
allergic hypersensitive
lack of rest
emotional stress
excessive consumption of sugar, fat, starch
improper nutrition
heredity pre-disposition
There is still no other published cure for the skin disorders that can cause dandruff so most of the 50 million people in the United States who have it find they get it again and again.

External Causes
The following factors may make the flaking of dandruff worse and considered to be external causes for the problem:

Excessive use of hairsprays and gels.
Improper use of hair-coloring products or excessive use of electric hair curlers
Cold weather and dry indoor heating.
Tight fitting hats and scarves.
Infrequent shampooing of the hair or inadequate rinsing.
Stress, anxiety and tension.
Dandruff & The Fungus Theory
Contrary to popular theory, although bacteria may aggravate a dandruff condition, germs do not cause the initial problem. The precise cause of dandruff is unknown.

Most medical authorities consider dandruff, even the mildest forms, to be a type of scalp or skin related disease.

Clinically, one description of dandruff is seborrhea capitos or excessive sebum production of the scalp.

Today most skin specialists agree that dandruff is associated with a tiny fungus called Pityrosporum ovale , P. ovale for short.

This fungus lives on our bodies and scalp all the time, usually without causing a problem. Unfortunately, for some people, it can increase in numbers, leading to dandruff.

Additional Causes of Dandruff
Dandruff is seasonal. It is most severe during the winter and mildest during the summer. The most common symptom of dandruff is scaling with occasional itching.

Dandruff scales usually occur as small, round, white-to-gray patches on top of the head. Scaling can occur anywhere on the scalp, in the hair, on the eyebrows, the beard and can spread to the neck and shoulders.

Dandruff is often known as “dry scalp”, but people with oily scalps tend to suffer most. An oily scalp also supports the growth of P. ovale.

Dandruff & Baldness
As always, myths and rumors pervade any type of hair or scalp condition. For many years the common belief was held that untreated dandruff would eventually lead or contribute to baldness.

Current thinking does not support these original beliefs. Many people, both men and women, live under the fear that dandruff may lead to baldness. Although these conditions may occur at the same time, there is absolutely no known or documented evidence that baldness is related to dandruff.

Traditional Treatments For Dandruff
The most common dandruff treatments are shampoos containing:

coal-tar
pyrithione zinc
salicylic acid
selenium sulfide
sulfur
Daily shampooing with thorough rinsing has been the treatment recommended until the present.

Since dandruff is a natural process, it can not be eliminated. It can only be managed and controlled.

Traditional Dandruff Shampoos
In the very beginning of the development of products for dandruff there were very few retail products available.

One of the best known was Head & Shoulders. Early products also included Enden, Banish, Fostex, Rinse Away and Double Danderine.

The current offerings have changed quite a bit and have become a lot more sophisticated. I can not personally offer a recommendation on the best product since I have luckily been spared the dandruff curse.

The best approach is to pick a product and try it. If the product works and is successful at controlling your dandruff, continue to use it. It is important to remember that there is no known “official” cure for dandruff. Once you have the problem the best that you can hope for is management and control.

If utilization of a retail dandruff product is used it should be remembered that this product will need to be continued indefinitely. Once the dandruff shampoo or dandruff products are discontinued, the dandruff will return.

Thorough cleansing of the scalp and the hair will keep dandruff flakes out of sight for up to three days. it takes the scalp up to three days before it can generate a new batch of snowy flakes.

A key point to remember is to select the mildest shampoo possible. Although detergent based shampoos will clean the hair and scalp well, they often cause drying will will make the flaking worse.

Treatment In Severe Cases
In severe cases dermatologists will prescribe a special ointment or lotion that will contain sulfur, salicylic acid, resorcinol, tar, selenium sulfide and cadmium sulfide. The concentration and frequency of use is dependent upon the severity of the case for which it is prescribed.

It is generally agreed that drugstore products which contain zinc pyritheone or selenium sulfide are the most effective in ridding the scalp of dandruff flakes.

If a scalp shows signs of redness, swelling, scabbing, or goeeyness – accompanied by flakes, in all likelihood there could be another scalp disease involved like psoriasis or ringworm.

With any of these symptoms it is important to see a physician immediately.

Diet
To counteract the inefficient carbohydrates and fatty-acid metabloization which can cause dandruff, include plenty of B vitamins in your diet.

Nutritional yeast and raw wheat germ are two excellent sources of B vitamins, particularly vitamin B6 which plays an important role in controlling dandruff.

Eggs and cabbage also provide vitamin B6 in addition to supplying sulfur which is nature’s beauty mineral for the scalp.

Sometimes an Allergy to daily products may cause dandruff in which case alternative food sources of vitamin B6 are preferred. Other common allergens which provoke dandruff are chocolate, nuts and shellfish.

Refined carbohydrates in white flour or sugar can cause dandruff and should be avoided as much as possible because they deplete the body of B vitamins. Saturated animal fats and trans-fatty acids found in margarine or shortening clog the arteries and interfere with the metabolization of the essential fatty acids. The good fats, found in nuts and flax seed benefit the body and promote healthy scalps.

Nutritional Supplements
Supplementing the essential fatty acids is more important since these are usually lacking. Evening primrose oil is a good source of gamma linolenic acid (GLA), easily absorbed by the body.

B6 deficiencies also cause dandruff. To prevent imbalances, the entire B complex should be included. In addition, vitamins A and E are important for skin health.

Silica is also recommended for improving scalp health. It is available in capsules from a vegetable source and in a liquid gel form.

Daily Dosages

Most Important:

Evening primrose oil, two 500 mg capsules three times daily
Vitamin B complex, 50 mg twice daily with meals
Vitamin B6 or Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate, 50 mg twice daily
Helpful

Vitamin A, 10,000 IU (not during pregnancy)
Vitamin E, with mixed tocopherols, 400 IU
Silica, 1,000 mg, two 500 mg capsules daily
Some Natural or Alternative Dandruff Shampoo Choices
Listed below are some of the current health food store brands of dandruff shampoo products:

Nature’s Gate Tea Tree
Nature’s Gate Aloe
Calaguala Fern & Cade Tar Scalp Treatment Shampoo (Aubrey Organics)
Selenium Blue Shampoo (Aubrey Organics)
Cedarwood Oil (Karooch Essential Oils)
Eucalyptus Oil (Karooch Essential Oils)
Rosemary Oil (Karooch Essential Oils)
Big Sky Tea Tree Shampoo/conditioner (Prairie Naturals)
Moonshine Recovery Emollient (Prairie Naturals)
White Lightening Scalp Tonic (Prarie Naturals)
Alternative Treatments
Apple cider vinegar used as the final hair rinse after a shampoo has proven very effective in balancing the pH levels of the scalp and controlling dandruff.

Do a rinse that is 1 part of apple cider vinegar to 3 parts of warm water. Apply cider vinegar can also be applied directly (undiluted) to the scalp. After the vinegar has had a chance to soak into the scalp, shampoo with a very mild shampoo.

Garlic and oil of oregano are also excellent for fighting dandruff. You can take it internally or externally depending on what seems to work best for your situation.

Alternating hot and cold water on the head increases circulation to the scalp. Yoga headstands will also help with circulation. Exercising out in the fresh air will also help with circulation to the scalp.

Brush your scalp carefully to loosen scales before shampooing. If you wash your hair daily use small amounts of baby shampoo. Harsh shampoos will just cause the sebaceous gland to overcompensate by producing more oil than necessary.

Deep breathing adds oxygen to the body which will help kill the fungus and overall help circulation.

Sulfur Products Are Beneficial

Onions are high in sulfur. Cut a fresh onion in half and rub it on the scalp.Wash your hair once a week with a sulfur based soap.

Avoid hair products that contain alcohol which dries out the scalp. Also avoid hair dryers which will also dry the scalp and add to the problem.

Tea Tree Oil & Aloe

Both tea tree oil and aloe is beneficial in combating dandruff. You can apply the aloe directly from a leaf of the plant and massage it into the scalp. Be sure to apply a good conditioner after shampooing since aloe may be drying.

Tea tree oil can be applied directly to the scalp or added to shampoo.

Alternative Physicians
Dandruff has been proved to respond to homeopathic treatments, acupuncture and acupressure and special massage. Cell salts and flower essences also have added benefit.

Before undertaking treatments that involve serious herbs, cell salts or homeopathy, consult the appropriate alternative health care provider.

Sunday-Over-The-Sink Shampoo
Ingredients: one beaten whole egg in one bowl, and two tablespoons of mayonnaise in another bowl. (Don’t do this in the shower-it’ll make you smell like a salad unless you want to wash after. That’s why you do it in a sink!) Hanging your head in the sink wet your hair and gently massages the whole beaten egg through your hair, taking extra care with your scalp. This treatment is meant to get the oils, built up conditioners, and dirt from the past week- off your scalp and purify it.

Let the egg sit for about a minute, then rise thoroughly with warm water. Massage in the mayonnaise in the same way, but paying attention to the tips of the hair, and let sit for about 2-3 minutes. (For a deep conditioning-wrap your head in a towel and sit in the sun for 30 minutes) Rinse with warm water and then shampoo with your normal shampoo.

Don’t condition after. Voila! Shiny, conditioned hair, with a squeaky clean scalp.

PS. This treatment works very well with people with oily scalp/hair or people that are trying to grow their hair out from a very SHORT do(gives the growing hair a clean environment to grow faster and healthier!).

Straight & Beautiful Hair
You put some milk in a sprits bottle and spray your hair while it’s damp. Then let it set for 20 minutes, then rinse and shampoo. It will make your hair straight and beautiful.

Static Free..
Put a dab of lotion in the palm of your hand and then rub it through your hair but not at the roots, just at the ends of your hair. It makes it so your hair doesn’t get all staticky.

Frizz Free
If you have curly hair and don’t want it to frizz, but still want it to be shiny and not frizzy, apply some Aloe Vera through hair.

Saving Money on Haircare
Here are some tips that could help you stretch your beauty budget.1.Go to a hair dresser that has a salon built onto her house. Her prices should be very reasonable. Check the price of a color, haircut, deep conditioning and a blow dry. The average price for this service is about Rps.1500.2. Choose a style that lasts a while between cuttings and doesn’t require a lot of styling products.

3. Choose hairstyles to work with rather than against your hair type.

4. To make my shampoo go further, keep an empty bottle in the shower next to the current bottle of shampoo you are using. When you are ready to lather up, squirt a SMALL amount of shampoo into the empty bottle and then add a ‘shot’ of water and shake it lightly. This distributes the shampoo over your hair more evenly, while using less. It also lathers up much faster than doing it the conventional way.

5. Collect complimentary and sample bottles and packages of hair care products and send them along when going on short trips. This is especially good for kids who tend to forget to bring things home.
6. To cut down on the cost of hair care, cut our own. Consider purchasing the book, ‘Cutting Your Family’s Hair’ by Gloria Handel. The directions and illustrations are excellent. She also gives recipes for hair care products you can make at home.

7. Find a beauty school or college in your area. For simple perms and cuts, they are just fine and much less expensive then the traditional salon.

8. Give up perms, hair-coloring and highlighting. Let your hair grow to below your shoulders and get a friend to trim it straight across every few months. Trim your own bangs, if you have them. Long hair can be worn down, in a ponytail, in a braid, in a French braid, or up in a bun. It doesn’t have to be blown dry or curled or set. And without chemicals, coloring, and heat, it can repair itself and look shiny and healthy. Beautiful! Easy! Feminine! Cheap!

9. Instead of using the expensive detangler products from the store, make a homemade version using 1 part conditioner to 10 parts water. Then put it into a recycled pump hair spray bottle. It works wonderfully.

10. Most hair does not benefit from daily washing with shampoo or from being washed twice in one bathing as some shampoo manufacturers suggest. Actually, doing these things can dry out your hair and scalp and make them prone to other problems. Find the least expensive shampoo that works for your hair, and use it only as often and in the quantity that is necessary to keep your hair healthy and manageable.

Is Shampooing daily harmful for the hair?
Everyday washing shouldn’t be a concern as long as you are using a mild shampoo, which can suit your normal hair.Something that nourishes while it cleanses. If your hair doesn’t feel unclean, just sweaty it is okay to simply rinse out the sweat too if you choose to.Also, after wash, keep your damp hair in a turbaned towel for about 15 minutes. Finger comb it in a gentle massage like movements and only brush gently.

The right way of washing Hair
Oiling my hair every time does not help it in any way. On the contrary, you end up using more shampoo every time, damaging the hairs natural oil balance, making it dry. Once a fortnight oiling is just fine.

To wash your hair, always wet it first before applying shampoo. Then, lather it by massaging with your fingertips. Rinse thoroughly until squeaky clean. Pat dry and finger comb out the tangles or use a wide tooth comb.

How to treat split ends?
Split ends, which are mainly caused when your hairs cell fail to hold together are result of exposure to harsh elements, chemicals or even excessive brushing.

The right kind of shampoo will minimize hair damage. Meanwhile it is also important to replenish ceramides, which are hairs natural cement, and is responsible for holding the hair cells together. A ceramides enriched shampoo will help repair hair fibre and reduce split ends.

To maintain Oily Hair
Oily hair always goes with any oily skin. The scalp has a tendency to secrete excess oil, which makes it lank and greasy.

It is therefore important to keep the scalp will only activate the oil glands causing further oiliness. So will combing more than required more so ever, do not succumb to the temptations of a harsh shampoo, which temporarily restores your hair but in the long run harms it.

Using a special shampoo for oily hair is the best, which is gentle enough to be used often. Also essential is to rinse at the shampoo thoroughly finishing with cold water.

For thin and limp Hair
Thin, limp, hair does not have a tendency to fall flat and dead. What you need is a volume booster. For starters choose your shampoo carefully. Ordinary shampoos donut do much for your kind of hair. Look up a shampoo especially for limp hair.

Secondly, donut comb your hair when wet, Let it dry naturally and finger comb it. A hair dryer can boost your hair for a while but on a regular basis can prove harmful for your hair. Then, brush your brush straight from your scalp and shake it free.

For Dry Brittle Hair
First check your shampoo! If you are using a harsh, unsuitable shampoo, it will not only dry your hair, it will cause breakage and dry scalp may turn flaky and cause a lot of other problems.

Use an especially mild shampoo made for dry hair. One fortified with essential oils to replace the last nourishment is ideal. A good conditioner also helps soften dry hair. After wash keep your damp hair in a turbaned towel for about 15 minutes.

Finger comb it in a gentle massage like movements-this-will activate the oil glands in your scalp. Then brush it gently. Oil massages followed by a steamy, hot towel on your head every 15 days will also help get rid of dryness.

Are Hair Colors Safe
Bronze or Blonde
Colour has come a long way and we are more willing to experiment now than we were willing to earlier.A head of coloured hair, even in the 1980s, drew a lot of attention and appreciates glances. But today, take a quick look around you and you will agree that 80-90 per cent of young college girls and even career women have coloured hair. And unless it is crazy colour, it is considered normal and acceptable. Should you or shouldn’t colour your hair is a question you often ask yourself. Here are a few answers to help you make up your mind about colouring your hair.

Are hair colours safe?
Yes, they are totally safe, in fact most of the colours today have special polymers and conditioners incorporated in them to make them superior to hair colours which were available earlier. These polymers and conditioners actually penetrate the hair shaft and enter the cortex, mending any damage in the normal hair structure.

They smoothen the outermost layer of hair that is made up of cuticles, which appear like tiles on a roof under the microscope. The ultimate effect after the use of such a product on your hair would be shinier, smoother and healthier hair. So far there appears to be no connection between the application of hair colour and the appearance of Gary hair.

Hair turns grey due to the inability of hair to produce melanin in the early stages of hair growth.
Melanin is the colour pigment in your hair, which can be black, brown, red or yellow. The individuality of your hair colour is determined by the percentage of each colour pigment, making each personas hair colour characteristically their own. Poor diet, illness, age, heredity, etc. can cause the acceleration of grey hair and the actual use of a hair dye has nothing to do with the greying process.

Which colour suits you the best is the question you should ask your beautician. Let her know if you had coloured or hennaed your hair earlier, the products you used and whether you had straightened or permed your hair. Also have your hair checked out for porosity or elasticity, both of which play a major role in how healthy you hair, will look after the colour. Discuss this with her in detail how long the process will take the cost and after care you will require to keep up the effect. You must also take a stand test so that both you and your hairdresser know what to expect at the end of the process.

What are the side effects of colorings?
If a professional taking into account all the above points does colorings, the side effects are almost nil, especially if the client follows the after care recommended.

However, it is very important that your hairdresser recommends a patch test in addition to all the points mentioned above, especially with a product you have not used before.

This is to check for allergic reaction before carrying out the colorings process. This should be done at least 24-28 hours in advance. What do you need to maintain the colour and the quality of your hair? Certain fashion colours fade easily and you may need to go back for a rinse once a month, for example, in the case of wine reds, you would need a regular touch up or rinse to maintain their intensity.

In the case of gray hair, it would depend on the individual growth rate of hair. On an average, hair grows ½”- ¾” every month, so a touch up once in 20 days is a must for gray hair. For those with no gray hair and a mild colour not too different from their natural colour, a touch up once in six months is ideal. For those with a drastic or dramatically different hair colour, a root touch up is important.

The after care needed is usually a shampoo for colour treated hair, which increases the life of your colour and conditioners to protect your hair. Too much exposure to sun, sea and chlorine should also be avoided. Which brand of colour should you use? It is usually best to leave the choice of colour to your hairdresser once you have discussed with her what you expect after the colour job.

The safest home use products now available in the market. They have a wide range of products in different shade from which you could choose. For those of you who are allergic to ammonia there is a new product called casting, which is available in a few fashion and basic states. So do go ahead and make a beauty statement with your hair colour.
